Kate Lewandowski

Kate Lewandowski was born at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Eighteen years later, she indulged her salmon-like tendency to return to her place of birth, though she neither spawned nor died during her time as a Yale undergraduate. After a year of being premed, Kate decided to pursue a career in public health, guided by her desire to improve the health care of millions of people and a visceral aversion to the idea of another semester of organic chemistry. During her senior year, she somehow convinced the staff of a Washington, D.C.-based health care research firm that her extensive technical theatre experience was applicable in the real world. As a result, Kate graduated from Yale with a degree in History of Science, History of Medicine and a job that does not include asking “Would you like fries with that?” She now earns her rent and beer money as a researcher, answering hospital administrators’ burning questions and Googling medical acronyms she doesn’t recognize.

Kate enjoys running to D.C. landmarks, seeing live theatre and music, talking too loudly in bars about the evolutions of medical education and the American hospital, baking, and planning for the day she dusts off her power tools and builds a bar in her apartment. She dreams of someday reforming the American health care system and then parlaying her success into a second career as either a biographer or a Food Network chef.

Good for you my friend! I'm a friend of James Evans, and something tells me that I will enjoy your posts thoroughly - as a Health Policy grad. myself. How did you like Yale by the way? I'm applying to their MPH Health Policy program. Let me know if you get a chance - dgutkoski@gmail.com

Kate,

You may be amused, as I continually am, by a NYC bus stop poster with a picture of Magic Johnson. It reads something like, New York City last year [2007] had more cases of HIV than any other US City.

I'm no public health expert, but doesn't that statistic stand to reason since I do live in, after all, the largest US City?
