Virginia Walters

Virginia Walters was born and raised in the commonwealth that is her namesake. Yes, she likes the song “Meet Virginia,” though it is only descriptive in that she sometimes drinks coffee at midnight. Yes, people call her other states’ names. No, you may not call her “Vagina,” “Va-jay-jay,” or any other moniker for a woman’s lady parts—at least not if you expect her to respond. She would prefer if you didn’t do so at all because it reminds her of being bullied in her neighborhood growing up, but these things happen.

Having majored in Women’s Studies and Religious Studies at William and Mary, Virginia decided to take her vast body of useful knowledge on the road and start an environmental non-profit, the Back Porch Energy Initiative. Since October, she has been traveling around the Southeastern United States with fellow blogger Liz Burroughs—along with 4 other fine young professionals—learning about community organizing, educating about energy efficiency, and overanalyzing every minute of it. She will be regaling you with tales from the road, and can guarantee you that almost all of them will be rife with feminist angst, genuine optimism, and a deep-seated discomfort with the conceptual boundaries of language.
